 |
 |
 |
The Foundation Language Programme is a 25 week course of intensive English language learning. It is designed to give students the language skills necessary to pursue the BBS degree course in International Hotel Management in Shannon or indeed their chosen degree, through English. The course is structured around four main teaching modules, which reflect the primary objectives of the programme:
1. English for Academic Purposes
This module aims to give students the specific academic language skills (both spoken and written) to pursue a degree through English. Topics covered include reading techniques, paragraph writing, essay writing, exam technique and giving presentations.
2. Professional English for Hospitality
This module aims to give students the written and spoken skills necessary to communicate effectively in a hotel environment. It also strives to familiarize them with the specific vocabulary needed for the various subjects in the Bachelor of Business Studies degree in International Hotel Management. Topics covered include vocabulary for hotel services, food and drink, bar skills, complaint handling, telephone skills, letter writing, and CV writing.
3. Communication Skills and Grammar
This module aims to build upon students’ existing competencies in order to raise their proficiency in the four language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) to a high level. Grammar is integrated into all modules of the program, but is given specific emphasis in this module. Topics covered include conversational skills, discussion and debates, interviewing, pronunciation, exposure to different accents, authentic texts, regular written assignments and all the main areas of grammar.
4. Cultural Studies
The purpose of this module is to give students the cultural skills necessary to live and work in Irish society. Students will also focus on vocabulary building, reading skills and discussion work. Topics covered include music, literature, politics, art, social issues, lifestyle and language.
Assessment Criteria
Students on the foundation programme are assessed according to the following criteria: attendance, homework, continuous assessment, project, presentation and final exam. Students have the opportunity to sit for the IELTS exam during the course of their studies.
Entry Requirements
As a general guideline, students should have a minimum composite score of 5 in the IELTS test. However, an IELTS test score is not a mandatory requirement. Prior to admission, we conduct our own language tests and interview each student individually to assess their language level and suitability for the course.
