Professional Placements

Students complete two professional placements during the course of their degree studies at Shannon College. Professional placement locations are carefully selected by the College and students are paid by their employers during their placements.

Professional Placement 1
This placement is at operative level and takes place in a European country such as Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, France or Ireland. The foreign language option that students are pursuing determines the location of the placement. For example, students studying German go on placement to either Switzerland or Germany. Students studying French may go on placement to Switzerland, Belgium, Luxembourg or France. Students studying English go on placement in Ireland.

Students are placed in leading continental hotels to ensure that they have every opportunity to observe the running of a large international business. The operative level placement has several objectives.

  • To develop product and system’s knowledge. This reinforces Year 1 learning, giving students an in-depth knowledge of the hotel industry.
  • To improve language skills.
  • To develop a strong work ethos.
  • To develop interpersonal, life and social skills.
While on placement, student’s learning is guided and culminates in the submission of a comprehensive diary based on their experience. Students also continue to develop their language capabilities through the completion of courses delivered via distance learning.

Professional Placement 2
During the second professional placement students work with major hotel groups in the UK, Ireland, Europe, USA, Asia or the Arabian Gulf. This placement offers students the opportunity to experience the international hospitality industry at management level and is a key element in helping students to prepare for their future roles as General Managers. The trainee management placement has several objectives.
  • To help students to merge their academic studies with recognised best practice in the hotel industry.
  • To expose students to an international management environment.
  • To prepare students for the challenges of management.
  • To give students the opportunity to take up their first management position, subject to their academic performance, ability and motivation.

The inclusion of two professional placements in the degree programs offered by Shannon College provides the students with an opportunity to gain the personal confidence and experience necessary to operate as effective managers. The placements are also important in helping the College to achieve its 100% job placement record.
