Memories from Dominique Bourdais – Class of 1983

“I specifically remember final exams and graduation in 1983 some 35 years ago. Charlie and I somehow managed to secure accommodation at the Pettit’s home in Clonmel. No doubt this was facilitated by Denise. Both Charlie and I were welcomed as we were part of the family. Colette and Brendan managed the entire “operations” like masters and for me it was a fantastic experience.

I remember driving to SCHM in Brendan’s Mercedes sitting next to him at the front. Somehow he appeared to be much bigger than me (Which was not hard at the time), but he put me at ease at a time when I was about to face the dreaded panel. To this day I have never forgotten the question he asked me as I sat for the final interview. The question was “What is a Claret” to which I replied full of confidence that it was a specific sparkling wine coming for Dié in France. I misunderstand “Clarette” for “Clairette” (check it here).

To this day I am convinced that most on the panel though I was taking the mick. I am however convinced Brendan understood. Somehow I landed the price from the IHF which was brilliant.”
