Tony McGetrick, Class of 1982 is currently working as a Tourism Consultant.

What 3 words best describe your experience as a student of Shannon College?

Be the best.

What college memory still makes you smile?

DC10 swerved off Shannon runway to avoid a rabbit!! Tannoy in kitchen announced “DC10 swerved off runway, need another 300 inflight meals”. Five minutes later and we would have been in the Shannon Knights!!

If you had to re-live your time in Shannon College, would you do anything differently?

Yes. Not fallen asleep during an Economics Exam!

What advice would you give to your 20 year old self?

Appreciate the knowledge and experience of the people training you. We were so, so lucky to have such a dedicated team of lecturers, all with real world experience and great characters to boot!

In your life, what achievement are you most proud of?

Being Chairman of Tourism Swansea Bay for 15 years. An opportunity to help other people and businesses improve quality offering.

What qualities do you think are most important to have for a rewarding career?

The basic understanding of the fundamentals of running a business, focusing on quality that matches the market level.

What has been the biggest challenge you have faced during Covid-19?

Not slapping the people who don’t follow the guidelines!!

Do you have words of wisdom that you try to live by?

BE THE BEST! During my years at Shannon we were always told that we were the best! Shannon College was the best and we had to live up to that reputation. If you are told every day that you are the best, you really believe that and it raises confidence levels. Encourage, train/develop others.

What advice do you have for current SCHM students who are looking for inspiration and hope?

There is always a positive outcome. It might not be the outcome you were looking for but be ready to make the most of it!
